Pieds, consoles et fixations pour radiateur : que choisir ?

Radiator brackets, feet and fixings: which to choose?

In short

  • A J wall bracket costs €5.72 to €7.83 per pair in our range; a pair of radiator feet €17.17 to €28.40, incl. VAT.
  • Stelrad specifies 2 brackets for a Novello radiator up to 1,600 mm long, and 3 from 1,800 mm.
  • A Gyproc partition with a single 12.5 mm board carries 40 kg per running metre according to the manufacturer: above that, an 18 mm reinforcement or floor-standing feet.

To install a radiator you need either wall brackets or floor-standing feet. The wall decides. This guide compares the radiator wall brackets and the radiator feet in our range, with prices and how many you need.

Wall bracket or feet: what is the difference?

A wall bracket hangs the radiator on the wall. It is the standard installation: the floor stays clear and the radiator is held firmly.

Feet, also called floor-standing brackets, carry the radiator from the floor. They are used when the wall cannot take the weight, or when there is no wall behind the radiator.

Which wall fixings do we offer?

J brackets, one per radiator height, plus kits for towel radiators. Brackets are sold in pairs:

The “H” of the J brackets is the radiator height: H600 for a radiator 600 mm high. Stelrad has a J bracket for each height from 300 to 900 mm, with separate references for type 11 and types 21 to 33. Have the type checked in store.

Are brackets supplied with the radiator?

Often, yes. For its Novello and Novello 8 ranges, Stelrad lists J brackets with anti-lift, screws, plugs and mounting instructions as supplied. They comply with the VDI 6036 guideline when the supplied anti-slide clips are fitted.

Our Belrad 6 and 8 connection radiators share the outputs of the Stelrad Novello and Novello 8, but Belrad is a wholesaler's brand. Check the box contents at pickup. Brackets sold separately are mainly for replacing lost ones or adding one.

How many brackets or feet do you need?

Two for a short radiator, three or four for a long one. Manufacturers give the number by length:

SourceRadiatorsNumber by length
Stelrad, J wall bracketsradiators 300 to 900 mm high2 brackets up to 1,600 mm, 3 from 1,800 mm
Radson, floor-standing bracketsradiators 300 to 600 mm high2 brackets from 400 to 1,800 mm, 3 from 1,900 to 2,400 mm, 4 from 2,500 to 3,000 mm
Radson, floor-standing bracketsradiators 700 to 900 mm high2 brackets from 400 to 1,200 mm, 3 from 1,300 to 1,800 mm, 4 from 1,900 to 2,400 mm

Radson gives a maximum load of 1,800 N per floor-standing bracket, about 180 kg. These figures apply to their own brackets: follow the instructions for your model.

The mounting instructions attached to our J bracket pages add a limit: on another type of wall, other screws and plugs may be needed, and more brackets.

When should you use feet rather than wall brackets?

When the wall cannot take the load. The typical case is a lightweight plasterboard partition.

According to Gyproc, a partition or lining with one 12.5 mm board carries 40 kg per running metre, provided the load's centre of gravity stays within 300 mm of the partition. With two boards, the permitted load rises to 70 kg per running metre.

Above that, Gyproc requires an 18 mm built-in reinforcement, in OSB or plywood, fixed between the studs. It is planned when the partition is built. On a finished partition, feet avoid opening it up.

Compare with the radiator's weight when full of water, shown on its technical sheet.

The universal type 22/33 feet are fixed on the screed, before the floor finish. The foot “without rosette” is sold without the cover that trims the passage through the floor.

What should you check before installing a radiator?

Three things: the radiator height, its type and the wall or floor. The height gives the bracket or feet reference. The type (11, 22 or 33) changes the depth, so the bracket.

When replacing a radiator, also think about the connections: our guide replacing a radiator: 6 or 8 connections explains how to identify them. For a new radiator, see our Belrad radiators by height and length.

Frequently asked questions about radiator feet and brackets

How many brackets does a radiator need?

Usually two. For its Novello range, Stelrad specifies 2 brackets up to 1,600 mm long and 3 from 1,800 mm.

Are brackets supplied with the radiator?

For Stelrad, yes: J brackets, screws, plugs and instructions come with the Novello and Novello 8. For a Belrad radiator, check the box contents at pickup.

Can a radiator be hung on a plasterboard wall?

Yes, within the wall's capacity. Gyproc gives 40 kg per running metre for a single 12.5 mm board; above that you need an 18 mm reinforcement or feet.

What height of radiator feet should you choose?

The radiator's height: our feet range from H300 to H900, like our J brackets. A 600 mm high radiator takes H600 feet.

How much does a radiator bracket cost?

In our range, from €5.72 for a pair of H300 J brackets to €28.40 for a pair of H900 feet, incl. VAT.
