Towel radiator with fan heater: when is it worth it?

In short

  • A towel radiator with fan heater adds a 1,000 W fan to the heating element. On our two models: 750 + 1,000 W (1,750 W) and 1,000 + 1,000 W (2,000 W).
  • The fan heats a bathroom used for short periods quickly: according to the manual, the boost with fan is set from 10 to 60 minutes, while the radiator surface takes at least 15 minutes to reach temperature.
  • At the same size, the fan version costs €102.27 to €107.28 more: €359.94 against €257.67 in 1590 x 500 mm, VAT included.

A towel radiator with fan heater combines an electric towel radiator with a small fan heater built into the control box. The radiator heats the room and your towels continuously, the fan gives a quick burst of heat on demand. This guide compares the electric towel radiators in our range with and without a fan, with real figures and prices.

What is a towel radiator with fan heater?

It is an electric towel radiator to which the manufacturer adds a 1,000 W fan heater, housed in the box at the bottom of the unit. It therefore has two heat sources that add up:

  • The heating element warms a fluid that circulates in the tubes. The heat is gentle and lasting, but slow to build up.
  • The fan heater blows warm air into the room as soon as it starts, like a portable fan heater.

The stated output of a fan model is the sum of both. A 1,750 W model is not a 1,750 W radiator in continuous use: it is 750 W of radiator and 1,000 W of fan, according to the table in the manufacturer's manual.

How many fan models are in our range?

Two, and we would rather say so plainly. Our electric towel radiators are mostly models without a fan. The two fan versions come in two sizes, each with an equivalent without a fan:

ModelSize (H x W)Heating elementFan heaterPrice incl. VAT
Digital 750 W1590 x 500 mm750 Wno€257.67
Digital + fan heater 1,750 W1590 x 500 mm750 W1,000 W€359.94
Digital 1,000 W1837 x 550 mm1,000 Wno€300.78
Digital + fan heater 2,000 W1837 x 550 mm1,000 W1,000 W€408.06

All four models share the same programmable digital control. Only the fan sets them apart. The price difference is €102.27 in 1590 x 500 mm and €107.28 in 1837 x 550 mm.

What does the fan change day to day?

Mainly speed. The manual explains it: the element heats the fluid, which then circulates naturally inside the unit, and the surface only reaches its optimal temperature after at least 15 minutes. The fan heats the air in the room as soon as it starts.

The manual links it to the Boost function, which runs the heating at full power for a fast rise in bathroom temperature. According to the manual:

  • with a fan, the Boost can be set from 10 to 60 minutes;
  • without a fan, from 15 to 120 minutes;
  • by default the Boost lasts 30 minutes, then the unit returns to normal operation.

The fan does not dry towels on the bars any better: the radiator does that. It warms the air, so the room is comfortable when you step out of the shower.

When is a fan heater useful?

  • The bathroom is used for short periods: one shower in the morning, one in the evening. A 15 to 30 minute Boost beforehand is enough, without heating the room all day.
  • The room has no other heating: the fan acts as a top-up when the bathroom is cold, in winter or after a long absence.
  • The radiator is small for the room: a 1,000 W fan temporarily supports a 750 W element.

A fan adds little if the bathroom is already heated by central heating, or if you want a silent unit: a fan always makes some noise, a standard towel radiator does not.

What output should you choose for your bathroom?

Choose on the heating element, not the total. The manual recommends 100 W per m² on average for a 2.50 m ceiling. The 750 W element therefore suits a bathroom of about 7.5 m², the 1,000 W element about 10 m². The fan adds fast heat-up, it does not replace this sizing.

For a small bathroom, a model without a fan may be enough, such as the white 1600 x 500 mm electric towel radiator, 700 W at €193.12 or the 1800 x 550 mm, 900 W at €218.62.

What does running the fan cost?

The calculation is simple: a 1,000 W fan running for 30 minutes uses 0.5 kWh. Multiply by your price per kWh to get the cost of one Boost. According to the manual, the unit also shows its consumption in kWh in its menu, with an estimate in euros.

Programming helps keep this consumption down. It allows up to three comfort periods per day, for example 6 to 9 am and 6 to 9 pm on weekdays, with a lower temperature the rest of the time.

Installation and maintenance: what to know

  • Connection: according to the manual, the unit runs on 230 V and must be connected by a qualified person, in line with the applicable rules. Call an electrician.
  • Air outlet: do not cover it with a towel. The manual states that this can trigger the fan's safety cut-out.
  • Filter: the fan has a dust filter to clean regularly, and the grilles can be vacuumed. A clogged filter can stop the fan (error code Err 6).
  • Children: the manual recommends fitting the unit with the lowest bar at least 600 mm above the floor.

Frequently asked questions about towel radiators with fan heater

What is the output of a towel radiator with fan heater?

It adds two outputs. On our models: 750 W radiator + 1,000 W fan (1,750 W in total), or 1,000 W + 1,000 W (2,000 W). Size the unit on the radiator output.

Can the fan heat the whole bathroom?

Yes, for a while. It brings the room up to temperature quickly with the Boost, from 10 to 60 minutes according to the manual. Continuous heating comes from the heating element.

Can the towel radiator be used without the fan?

Yes. According to the manual, the fan is linked to the Boost, which you start and stop with one button. The rest of the time the unit heats according to the set temperature and program.

Is a towel radiator with fan noisy?

The fan makes the noise of a fan while it runs. The manual gives no noise level. The radiator alone is silent.

How much does a towel radiator with fan heater cost?

In our shop, €359.94 incl. VAT for the 1,750 W model in 1590 x 500 mm and €408.06 for the 2,000 W model in 1837 x 550 mm. The versions without a fan cost €257.67 and €300.78.
