Radiateur électrique mural : wifi, thermostat, programmation

Wall-mounted electric radiator: wifi, thermostat, scheduling

In short

  • Our wall-mounted electric radiators range from €40.92 (dial thermostat) to €895.75 (Atlantic Divali) incl. VAT, from 1,250 to 2,000 W.
  • Two ranges are controlled from a smartphone: the Belrad wifi (€350.86), connected straight to the router, and the Atlantic Divali, through a Cozytouch Bridge.
  • Open window detection is on 5 ranges out of 6. On the Belrad wifi it switches to frost protection (7 °C) for 60 or 90 minutes, but it is off by default.

A wall-mounted electric radiator is controlled in one of three ways: a dial thermostat, a programmable electronic thermostat or a wifi app. This guide lists the functions of every electric radiator in our range, taken from its manual, with wall fixing and price.

What functions do our wall-mounted electric radiators have?

Six ranges, six levels of control. The table follows the manual attached to each product page, not the sales copy.

The Belrad wall or floor heater is the only one without electronics: no clock, no programme. It can be wall-mounted or stood on castors.

Which wifi electric radiator should you choose?

Two of our models, and they do not connect the same way.

  • Belrad wifi, 2,000 W (white or black): built-in 2.4 GHz wifi. Its manual describes an app with six modes: comfort, eco, frost protection, programme, auto and holiday (1 to 60 days).
  • Atlantic Divali, 2,000 W: Atlantic's Cozytouch app requires a Cozytouch Bridge, bought separately, connected to the internet box. The brochure also mentions an auto mode that learns the household's routine and built-in mood lighting.

The Stelrad models have no wifi. The Alu Simple Dry comes with a remote control, the Vertex Plan E with a wireless RF thermostat that can control several radiators.

What does a programmable thermostat do on an electric radiator?

It changes temperature by itself according to the time and day. On the Belrad wifi each day has 24 one-hour slots, set to comfort (19 °C by default), eco (15.5 °C) or frost protection (7 °C), with a setpoint from 7 to 30 °C in 0.5 °C steps.

According to Stelrad, the Vertex Plan E RF thermostat has two uses. In a living room it switches between comfort and eco, at most 5 °C apart. In a bathroom it switches between comfort and boost: full output for up to 60 minutes, twice a day.

The benefit is practical. Belgian advice centre écoconso recommends heating only occupied rooms and turning the heating down or off at night: a weekly programme does it for you.

One caveat: the Belrad wifi manual forbids control by an external timer or programmer. So do not plug an electric radiator into a smart plug if its manual rules it out; choose a model that is programmable out of the box.

How does open window detection work?

By temperature. On the Belrad wifi, a drop of 2 °C or more within 5 minutes switches the radiator to frost protection for 60 or 90 minutes, then it returns to its mode. From the factory the function is set to “oF”, i.e. off: switch it on yourself.

The Vertex Plan E works on the same principle, according to Stelrad. The limit is shared: a window left slightly ajar that barely cools the room may go unnoticed.

How do you fix an electric radiator to the wall?

With the included brackets and the clearances in the manual. They differ from one model to another:

  • Belrad wifi: 4 brackets, 6 mm drill holes, at least 20 cm above and at the sides, 10 cm above the floor and 60 cm in front. The manual requires installation by a qualified electrician.
  • Belrad wall or floor heater: holes of about 8 mm, at least 200 mm below the unit and at the sides, 500 mm in front.
  • Stelrad Cloud and Alu Simple Dry: brackets, screws and plugs included, control panel at the top and cable at the bottom. These are class II appliances: they are not earthed.
  • Stelrad Vertex Plan E: J-brackets and safety screws included, radiator fitted vertically, cable at the bottom.

Two rules appear in every manual: never directly below a socket, and never covered.

Can a wall-mounted electric radiator go in a bathroom?

Yes, but not any model. According to Stelrad's sheets, the Cloud (IP24), the Alu Simple Dry and the Vertex Plan E (IPX4) can go in zone 2 or 3, out of reach of anyone in the bath or shower, with the socket in zone 3. The Vertex's battery thermostat must stay in zone 3.

The Belrad wifi is IPX0: its manual rules out the vicinity of a bath or shower. Have your electrician confirm the location. To compare with a hot water model, read our guide to bathroom radiators, hot water or electric.

Thermostat, thermal inertia or design: what changes comfort?

Control decides when you heat, technology decides how. Stelrad describes the Cloud and Alu Simple Dry as dry inertia radiators; Atlantic describes the Divali's heating body as cast iron. The pros and cons of thermal inertia are covered in our French guide to inertia radiators.

For looks, the Vertex Plan E features in our guide to flat and vertical designer radiators.

Frequently asked questions about wall-mounted electric radiators

How does a wifi electric radiator work?

It connects to your home wifi and is controlled from an app. According to its manual, our Belrad model uses 2.4 GHz: the app sets the mode, the temperature and each day's programme.

Do I need a hub to control a wifi radiator?

It depends on the model. The Belrad wifi connects straight to the router; the Atlantic Divali uses the Cozytouch app, which requires a Cozytouch Bridge plugged into the internet box, according to Atlantic's brochure.

Can a wall-mounted electric radiator be plugged into a socket?

Yes for our models “with plug”: they come with a cable and plug (1.2 m for Stelrad, 1.5 m for the Belrad wifi). In a bathroom, Stelrad requires the socket to be in zone 3.

Can a wifi electric radiator go in a bathroom?

Not our Belrad wifi model: its manual states IPX0 and forbids use close to a bath or shower. The Stelrad Cloud (IP24), Alu Simple Dry and Vertex Plan E (IPX4) are designed for zones 2 or 3, under conditions.

How high above the floor should an electric wall radiator be fitted?

It depends on the model: the Belrad wifi manual asks for at least 10 cm below the unit, the Belrad wall or floor heater manual 20 cm. Always follow your model's manual, which also gives side and front clearances.
